Salinity is a major issue facing some land managers in SEQ. It affects plant growth, reduces the productive output of land and can cause damage to infrastructure.

If you are living in the Locker or Bremer catchments, you may have noticed some areas of bare, salty ground, regions growing only salt tolerant species, or waterlogging. These are all signs of salinity.

Salinity is significant environmental problem in Australia. Although salt occurs naturally in our landscape, the replacement of native deep-rooted vegetation with shallow-rooted crops and pastures has dramatically increased the level of salinity found in our soils and waterways.

Salinity is a complicated land and water management issue.

We work with landholders and organisations to address salinity by:

  • Sharing information and promoting management activities such as:
  • Excluding stock from salinity affected areas and reducing grazing pressure to allow native species to regenerate
  • Encouraging water efficiency in farming practices
  • Making better use of salt affected lands by identifying and planting salt tolerant species
  • Maintaining native deep-rooted vegetation and ensuring a good level of groundcover
These techniques may help to reduce deep drainage, limiting the amount of water entering the water table and reducing localised salinity.
  • Investing in research to guide salinity management activities
  • Mapping salinity extent across catchments
  • Partnering with Local Governments to promote and facilitate careful development planning in salinity risk areas
