Science and Planning
The Healthy Waterways is leading the science, planning, monitoring and evaluation of Healthy Country.
The science team are coordinated through Healthy Waterways and include scientists from Griffith University, University of Queensland, eWater CRC, CSIRO and SEQ Catchments.
The team will work closely with the other partners to integrate sound science with the implementation and engagement components of Healthy Country.
Outputs from the science team will include:
decision-support tools to design management interventions at a local scalemonitoring and evaluation design at a local scale a spatial optimisation tool that will support investment decisions for waterway restoration at a regional scale. These outputs will be underpinned by a sound understanding of current systems in the three priority catchments and in South East Queensland. They will assess the sediment and nutrient mechanisms, and detail the major sources of these pollutants in the region.
Studies have shown that gully, hill slope and channel erosion are prevalent in the priority catchments of the Logan and Bremer Rivers and Lockyer Creek. Through extensive field work and community consultation, the science team will work with local communities to assess priority areas for restoration.
The effectiveness of these management interventions will be monitored and evaluated through the existing Ecosystem Health Monitoring Program in conjunction with specific monitoring at the property scale.
